It is often the case with mass violence such as the recent shootings in Texas or the attack in New York that people assume the criminals have some mental health issues. According to experts, however, committing mass violence doesn’t mean perpetrators all have mental illness. In fact, being young and male and having a history of childhood abuse and exposure to violence are much more linked with violence. There is also a fear that calling the shootings a mental health problem distracts American leaders from developing legislations that can prevent gun violence through a scientific, public health approach.
